Around the Empire
MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: Our large adult son is at it again. Aaron Judge made Yankee history yesterday as he hit his major league leading 29th home run. That dinger tied him with Joe DiMaggio, yes THAT Joe DiMaggio, for the Yankee rookie franchise home run record. Judge only needs one more dinger to surpass Joltin’ Joe for said record. It’s July 6th. I think he can do it. At his current dinger rate, he may set the MLB rookie home run record before the year is over with. That’d be cool. Judge is cool.
Newsday | Steven Marcus: Ji-Man Choi was called up. Ji-Man Choi destroyed a baseball. It went 457ft into the right field bleacher. Ji-Man Choi caught balls thrown to him while playing first base. What I’m trying to say is that he is already an improvement over recently DFA’d Chris Carter. How long this lasts is anyone’s guess, but it was a welcome sight.
New York Daily News | Mike Mazzeo: Gary Sanchez is going to the Home Run Derby along with fellow teammate and massive dong hitter Aaron Judge. Logan Morrison is not and said that he didn’t think Gary Sanchez should be in the Derby. Gary was asked about this and said that he was invited, it was an honor to be invited, and that it wasn’t his fault that Morrison wasn’t selected. Pretty much, yeah. That’s all there really is to it.
New York Post | AP: Speaking of the Home Run Derby, the matchups for the first round have been revealed. The defending champion and hometown dinger hero, Giancarlo Stanton, is the #1 seed and will face off against the #8 seed, Gary Sanchez. Judge is the #2 seed and will take on #7 seed Justin Bour of the Marlins. Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers, the #3 seed, will go against sixth-seeded Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies. Finally, fourth-seeded Royals player Mike Moustakas will try to out-dinger #4 seed Miguel Sano of the Twins.
Newsday | Erik Boland: Some good news on the injury front. Matt Holliday is finally feeling better. The Yankees are close to diagnosing the strange viral infection keeping Holliday from playing. Seriously, what the bunt did he eat? Holliday took batting practice yesterday and he is hoping to be back on Friday. That would be great. Next time, order the lasagna please.
