A’s want Torres or Frazier; Judge chips tooth in celebration; Hicks and Austin to start rehab next week; Garcia could be a Gray alternative; NYY watching Wilson; Torre, Posada see potential in current team

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at New York Yankees
“Okay, you walk it off and then I’ll get him during the celebration. Then they can’t demote me!”

FanRag Sports | Jon Heyman: The Yankees have been heavily involved in talks for Athletics’ ace Sonny Gray. For a while it seemed like a package headlined by Jorge Mateo and/or Estevan Florial could get the job done. However, now it seems like a deal is more unlikely as the A’s are insisting on getting either Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier in return for Gray. As far as we know, those two are both off-limits in all talks. Hopefully Billy Beane lowers his demands a bit.

New York Daily News: After Brett Gardner hit a walk-off home run yesterday, the Yankees greeted him at home plate to celebrate. Unfortunately, Aaron Judge was a victim of the celebration. It seems that Gardner’s helmet accidentally hit Judge. He walked into the clubhouse grabbing his jaw after being struck. It’s not a serious injury though as he only chipped his tooth and is expected to be in the lineup tonight.

New York Daily News | Mike Mazzeo: Aaron Hicks and Tyler Austin are scheduled to begin rehab assignments at the end of the Yankees’ current homestand on August 2nd. Hicks was having a great season before getting hurt. His return would normally be good news, but it’s bad news for Clint Frazier. Frazier has only impressed since being called up, but roster difficulties make him the odd man out until rosters expand.

New York Post | Joel Sherman: While Sonny Gray has been the Yankees’ #1 target, a less expensive option might have just opened up for them. So far this year, the Twins were looking at themselves as contenders, but have finally started to fade. They just acquired Jaime Garcia from the Braves but are now open to dealing him due to their recent skid. If Gray’s cost is too high, checking out Garcia could make sense.

Detroit Free Press | Anthony Fenech: While the focus has been on whether or not Sonny Gray will be a Yankee, could Brian Cashman’s next move be to bring another former Yankee back? That may be the case as the team was reportedly “watching” Justin Wilson. Considering the Yankees already have a super bullpen, it seems more like due diligence than anything unless Cashman wants baseball’s first super-duper bullpen.

New York Post | Charles Cotton: Speaking at Joe Torre’s annual Safe at Home Foundation Golf and Tennis Classic, both Torre and Jorge Posada praised the current Yankees. Torre said that he sees potential in this group to be special while also taking time to praise the job Brian Cashman has done. He added that “if the Boss were alive” he doesn’t think this kind of rebuild and turn around would be possible. Posada praised the team’s fight and desire saying they never give up, even when they’re down.
