New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox: Jordan Montgomery vs. Drew Pomeranz

Baseball is back as the Yankees begin the second half in Boston.

Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

Baseball is back, and the slowest week in sports is officially over. Jordan Montgomery will face off against Drew Pomeranz as the Yankees open a four-game series in Boston tonight. The Bombers lead the season series 4-1, but a lot has changed since the teams last met on June 8th. After struggling for the past month, the Yankees find themselves 3.5 games back of the Red Sox, so this weekend presents a great opportunity for the team to really turn things around.

The Yankees haven't played a game since July 9th, but injuries have changed the roster quite a bit. Michael Pineda might have thrown his last pitch for the club. Doctors diagnosed Greg Bird with Os Trigonum inflammation, and his season could be in jeopardy if he elects surgery. Matt Holliday is back in the lineup tonight after dealing with Epstein-Barr virus, and Rob Refsnyder was sent down to make space on the roster. Starlin Castro is still rehabbing but could return as early as tomorrow. Tonight also marks the Major League debut of first baseman Garret Cooper.

The Yankees will see all three of Boston's southpaw starters this weekend, beginning with Pomeranz tonight. With that in mind, I imagine the Yankees' lineups will be heavy with right-handed hitters. Cooper and Ronald Torreyes are getting starts over Ji-Man Choi and Tyler Wade. Clint Frazier isn't in the lineup tonight, but he'll undoubtedly get a start or two this weekend.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm. The game is being broadcast on YES and MLB Network tonight.
