The Yankees finally selected someone other than a right-handed pitcher with their fourth round pick of right fielder Canaan Smith. Smith is a high schooler committed to play at Arkansas next year. He has played first base and catcher, although he is expected to play outfield at the next level.
Smith’s selection gives the Yankees two college players and two high school players to this point in the draft. Canaan has good power potential and turned in one of the best seasons in terms of walks in high school history. That lends itself to what is said to be very impressive plate discipline from this kid. That’s very exciting.
