A Different view of potential trades and the future of the Yankees

Everyone and their mother seems to be of the opinion that the Yankees must trade for a "cost controlled" starter this year despite the fact that the guys that we would be trading for are all flawed in one way or another. Few, if any of these guys are worth the prospects they will cost given who our trade partners would be. If anything, I'd rather go buy cheap on Harvey since the Mets hate him and just seem to want to get rid of him.

And while I don't think high cost rentals are the answer either (such as the guys on the Royals) what needs to be said is that the Yankees can afford salary dumps. Specifically one individual salary dump.

Miguel Cabrera.

I know. He's old, costs a ton, "Bird is the word" and we need pitching, not a 1B. Hear me out.

The Yankees cap space is unknown in the future because of our ownership. And while people look to the 2019 class as the ultimate prize, what also needs to be considered is what the Yankees lose after the 2019 season, not what they gain before it.

Didi, Castro and Hicks will all be 30 and Free Agents come 2020. It's foolish to think in my mind, given our current ownership, and the flaws that these 3 guys have, that they will all be Yankees come that time. These "cost controlled starters" everyone wants will also be free agents at that point.

If our ownership shells out $300 - 500 million in free agent money in 2019, do you think they are going to resign the above mentioned players and whoever we trade for before then? Doubtful. Even if they spend nothing (also not likely), the idea of signing three 30 year old position players doesn't sound promising when they aren't even bonafide All-Stars AND we have replacements waiting for them. Despite the success these 3 have, there's no telling what they look like at 30. If one of these essentially, bridge pitchers cost us a guy like Adams or Sheffield then we are just screwing ourselves.

Instead, the Yankees can look to trade some of these guys before then and replace them from within our farm system options.

That still doesn't answer why Miggy. Well that part is easy. He's could easily be our David Ortiz for the next 6-8 years, moving to DH when he no longer can play 1B full time. He's a proven super star who can hit anyone, anywhere at any time.

Detroit wants to move him (and half their roster). We have the pieces to go about doing it, provided of course we eat most of his salary. So what would it take? Here would be my proposal.

Yankees receive Miggy and take on 150 of the 184 million he is owed over the next 6 years through his age 40 season. That's good for $25 million a year. The Yankees are then fully responsible if his options vest for his age 41 and 42 seasons.

The Tigers receive:
1. Jorge Mateo

2. Dustin Fowler or Clint Frazier

3. Tyler Austin or Greg Bird

4. Domingo Acevedo

5. Ian Clarkin

5 for 1 deal. We get another monster middle of the line-up bat who can hopefully continue to be one of the best hitters ever. We pay him a lot, but if he is anything like he has been for the past 5 years it would be well worth it. He can easily slot into the DH spot after a few years if 1B becomes too much. The thought of him, Judge, Sanchez and any combination of Didi, Castro, Torres, Harper, or Machado in the middle of the line-up would be down right scary.
