The Yankees go for the sweep in their 3-games series against the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at Yankee Stadium. Michael Pineda (1-1, 3.97) will oppose Adam Wainwright (0-2, 7.00).
Pineda chased baseball immortality in his last start, carrying a perfect game into the seventh inning during the Yanks' home opener. A 2-out double by Evan Longoria spoiled Big Mike's bid for perfection. He threw 93 pitches over 7 2/3 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits, striking out 11, and yielding no walks. Pineda got the win, his first of the year, in one of the best starts of his career.
Wainwright struggled in his last outing, pitching only 4 innings while giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 3. Wainwright is now 0-2 on the season.
The Yankees extended their winning streak to six straight games on Saturday by beating the Cardinals 3-2 on Jackie Robinson Day. The Bronx Bombers stand one game behind the Orioles in the AL East following Baltimore's victory over Toronto earlier today.
Tonight's game will be broadcast on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. Tune in to WFAN, New York for the Yankee radio broadcast. First pitch is set for 8:05 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
