The Yankees’ managerial search has finally come to an end. On Friday night, news broke that the club had selected Aaron Boone to be their next manager. He will replace Joe Girardi, who the Yankees parted ways with back in October.
Some Yankees fans hoped that Brian Cashman’s decision to let Girardi go meant that he already had a replacement in mind. However, Cashman later revealed that he had “no preconceived candidate or list of replacements when he informed Girardi of the firing.”
In the end, the Yankees interviewed Rob Thomson, Eric Wedge, Hensley Meulens, Chris Woodward, Carlos Beltran, and Boone. It seemed like Beltran might have an advantage because he already has a relationship with many of the Yankees players. Plus, he was known for being a good mentor in the clubhouse. Meulens, the Giants’ bench coach, also made it to the final round of consideration. Instead, the Yankees opted to go with Boone, who doesn’t have any coaching experience.
Yankees fans, along with Pinstripe Alley readers and staff members, seem to have mixed opinions on the new manager. Former Yankees seem happy with the choice, as many, including Mark Teixeira and David Cone, took to Twitter to offer their congratulations to Boone.
Now that the Yankees have a manager, Cashman can turn his attention to more important things, like signing Shohei Ohtani, and getting the team ready for 2018. All we can do now is hope that Boone is a great manager, and wait and see what happens next.
