The Houston Astros were 10-0 in games started by Justin Verlander since he joined the team on August 31st. That perfect streak was broken last night by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Verlander gave up two runs on three hits, but Dodgers' starter Rich Hill was even better. Hill allowed only a solo shot to George Springer over 4 2/3 innings. Four Los Angeles relievers shut out Houston the rest of the way to close out the win and send the 2017 World Series to a decisive seventh game.
This is the third time in four years that the Fall Classic is going the distance. But it is the first time ever that Game Seven of the World Series will be played at Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers had won the National League pennant nine previous times since leaving Brooklyn for the West Coast following the 1957 season. Only once did they play in the Fall Classic's ultimate game, but it took place in Minnesota. In that showdown, Sandy Koufax defeated Jim Kaat to clinch the '65 title for Los Angeles.
Lance McCullers Jr. takes the hill for the Astros tonight. He will be opposed by Yu Darvish. McCullers defeated Darvish in their Game Three face off at Minute Maid Park last Friday night. The Astros won it 5-3, driving Darvish from the game with a four-run second inning. McCullers limited the Dodgers to three runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The two teams added to their combined World Series home run record last night. Joc Pederson contributed a solo shot in the seventh inning to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. The clubs' homer tally now stands at 24.
In Game Two, the Dodgers and Astros combined to hit eight home runs, setting a new World Series single-game record. They hit seven in Game Five on Sunday, surpassing the record 21 homers hit by the Angels and Giants in 2002.
The Astros will be trying to win their first ever championship tonight. The Dodgers are going for their first since 1988, and seventh overall.
Tonight's game starts at 8:00 EDT and it's on FOX. This is your open thread for the day. Act accordingly.
