Last week I asked for questions for our Yankees mailbag. Plenty of questions were submitted in the comments section and via email, and I plan on answering many of those questions in two separate posts during the week. In the meantime, we also received a good question about prospects that I decided to open up to the entire staff.
TommyJohn asked: Which small chance prospect(s) are you particularly pulling for?
Tanya
Jhalan Jackson is always my favorite sleeper pick. He has some pretty incredible power potential even though he is buried in a system of outfielders. He’s patient at the plate and a pretty good defender too.
Jason
I root for Nestor Cortes, who is a former 36th rounder from 2013. He’s just 22 years old and has seen time in the upper minors. He’s a soft-tossing lefty, so who knows if he can make it in the majors, but he racks up strikeouts and continues to defy the odds. I like him.
Andrew
J.P. Feyereisen: Yes, even the last-ranked man acquired in the Andrew Miller deal has a lot of intrigue around him. Why do I love him?
1) His fastball just keeps getting better and better and he had a 1.70 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings in Double-A.
2) As a D-3 school graduate, I can appreciate his unlikely ascent to relevance from a similar college (UW-Stevens Point).
3) His name is "FIRE RISIN.'"
Greg
Dietrich Enns would probably be my answer. He seems to be excelling at every level and it would be really cool to have a fantastic lefty pitcher come out of our farm system. Plus, I just love his name! There are some clever pun possibilities there.
Caitlin
My initial answer was also Enns. He had a heck of season last year, and I developed a soft spot for him while writing the minor league recaps. I also want to take this opportunity to mention that Claudio Custodio had my favorite name in the system (he is a free agent now).
Ryan
I'm going with Trey Amburgey. Love the last name and though nobody seems to care for his defense, they seem excited with his speed and offensive potential. Hopefully he can overcome the hamstring injuries.
Nikhil
My favorite low-key prospect is Yefrey Ramirez. He's a position player turned pitcher who the Yankees got from Arizona in the Rule 5 Draft, and he put up great numbers in Low and High A. Plus, I can't find any scouting reports on him. I feel like the mystery adds to the fun.
Tyler
I'm pulling for Thairo Estrada. He's a strong gloveman and can play anywhere across the infield. I like him as a super-utility type. Plus, he's made adjustments with his bat. He went from a zero-power guys to hitting 8 home runs in 2016. That won't blow you away, but he's very easy to root for.
Kunj
Donny Sands because:
He’s a loose cannon FBI agent suspended for playing by his own rules. But this summer, he’s the only hope for a country on the brink of nuclear war.
Mark Wahlberg is… DONNY SANDS.
