Around the Empire

CBS Sports | R.J. Anderson: Yankees top catching prospect Gary Sanchez was officially called up to the Bronx. The expectation is for him to DH against the lefty Steven Matz. During Monday’s game against the Mets, Brian Cashman alluded to Sanchez being called up today and it seems like it’s happening. Fans could also see Aaron Judge, Tyler Austin, and Ben Heller (acquired in the Andrew Miller trade) sometime this year.

New York Times | Tyler Kepner: With Sanchez being called up and expected to split time with Brian McCann both at catcher and DH, Alex Rodriguez’s future and playing time is once again in question. To his credit, Rodriguez says he’s “at peace” with whatever the Yankees choose to do, even if that means cutting him. Citing his strong resume, he thinks he can come back strong next year and wants to stay, but says he hasn’t heard anything from upper management about being cut. For now, he says he also has value in his veteran presence and leadership, and is willing to help guide young players.

Baseball America | Josh Norris: 2015 first round pick James Kaprielian spoke regarding his rehab process and how he plans on getting back to the field. Kaprielian says he just wants to get back out there and help the organization and be a part of the new youth movement. Even though his rehab is going well and he’s progressing, it seems unlikely he’ll be able to take the mound this season, but the Arizona Fall League does seem like a possibility.

NJ.com | Brendan Kuty: When the Yankees traded Carlos Beltran for Dillon Tate, many were questioning the move considering the year Tate has been having. However, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 draft has a lot of upside that the Yankees clearly feel they can tap into. The plan is to send him to Low-A Charleston and put him in the bullpen so Tate can take it easy while he works on his mechanics and delivery.

Twin Cities | Mike Berardino: Twins’ rookie Max Kepler made some waves on Monday after hitting just the fifth three home run game in Twins’ history. Yankees legend Reggie Jackson could be credited with helping Kepler find his power swing after Jackson worked with him prior to the Yankees/Twins June 25th game at Yankee Stadium.
