Around the Empire

New York Daily News | Mark Feinsand: We have been talking a lot about Gary Sanchez lately. Today will be no different. Gary Sanchez has thus far exceeded expectations since being called up. Yesterday, he was named the AL Player of the Week. Hitting .523 with four home runs and six RBI will help net you that title. Add on a stolen base and some incredible defense and there’s a lot to be excited about.

MLB.com | Jim Callis: Oh hey, more on Gary Sanchez. The Kraken also made the Prospect Team of the Week. Winning the AL Player of the Week award probably helps with that. In addition to Sanchez, Pulaski Yankees OF Leonardo Molina made the cut as well. The young, and I do mean young, prospect is having his best month of the year. Plus, his first name will lead to many many puns in the future. Good luck.

Wall St. Journal | Jared Diamond: Aaron Judge is tall. The young right fielder is 6’7” and it could be a detriment. As explored in this article, not many players with Judge’s height have ever taken the field. Usually they are pushed towards pitching, much like Judge was in Fresno State. We’ll see what the verdict is down the line.

LoHud Yankees Blog | Chad Jennings: With the kids being called up, Mark Teixeira is seeing more time on the bench. Teixeira has been perfectly okay with this situation, stating that he understands the transition period the Yankees are in. In addition, he knows his body can no longer handle the full time status. Having such a great defensive player like Teixeira mentor Tyler Austin at first base is pretty helpful.

New York Post | Joel Sherman: Brian McCann is also taking on the role of mentor to the Baby Bombers. There are speculations that the Yankees will try and move McCann before the 2017 season. There’s also the chance that they keep McCann on as a veteran backup catcher, much like Girardi was back during the dynasty. Maybe they McCann find some room for him.
