Around the Empire
NJ.com | Randy Miller: Earlier this month, top prospect Jorge Mateo was suspended two weeks for violating team policy. While much was speculated about what he did, the team never officially said what he did wrong. While they’re still keeping the exact nature of his violation under wraps, Mateo did take some time to address the suspension saying he’s ready to move forward with a “good attitude” and he also addressed the organization’s recent acquisition of Torres saying he’s excited to play with someone with “good talent.”
Today’s Knuckleball | Jon Heyman: It’s been no secret that Chris Sale is on the trading block and could move in the right deal. The Yankees are one of a handful of teams who could meet the demands of the White Sox, who reportedly want five top prospects in any Sale deal. Also noted is that Andrew Miller is likely to stay put and how Carlos Beltran, despite being the team’s best hitter, hasn’t drawn much interest. Although Beltran did get fake traded to the Indians last night.
MLB Pipeline | Jim Callis: An updated look at MLB.com’s midseason top 100 prospects reveals five Yankees. Which includes Gleyber Torres, who came over in the Aroldis Chapman trade, and 2016 first round pick Blake Rutherford. The farm system is really coming along. The full top 100 list can be found here.
ESPN | Sam Henken: The Yankees are at least willing to listen to any and all offers on closer Andrew Miller (that was so nice to type). However, just as with the Chapman trade, if anything were to take place Hal Steinbrenner would have to sign off on the deal.
NJ.com | Randy Miller: Newly acquired shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres reveals how exactly he got his unique first name. His father is apparently the one who deserves the credit after making it up based on a similar name he heard. His mother took some convincing, but she seems to have come around on the name.
