Around the Empire
New York Post | George A. King III & Ken Davidoff: We’re one week away from the trade deadline, and as expected talks for Aroldis Chapman have been heating up. As of 11:15pm last night, the most likely deal in place seems to be SS Gleyber Torres from the Cubs in exchange for Chapman. Other names such as third baseman Jeimer Candelario and right-handed pitcher Adam Warren (cry havoc!) have also been thrown around. Stay tuned, a deal could happen at any time.
NJ.com | Brendan Kuty: As the above post notes the Yankees might be finalizing a deal around Gleyber Torres for Aroldis Chapman. If the trade does go through, the Yankees would be stockpiling at the shortstop position. Torres himself, though, is very young for his level (currently in High-A at age 19) but has the tools to be fast-tracked to the majors, could stick at shortstop but also could likely move to third given his young age. Which could explain why the Yankees are targeting him.
New York Post | Ken Davidoff: As the Yankees are seemingly finalizing offers for Chapman, it could be a sign of acceptance and that the team is ready to face the reality and become sellers. While the Yankees have had a relatively strong homestand against decent teams, they still might just be accepting what they are.
New York Daily News | Mike Lupica: Believe it or not, the current Yankees could field a solid team of All-Stars...depending on the criteria for All-Stars. If there’s one thing the Yankees could claim themselves as this year, it would be that they are the capital of the back-ends of contracts. With the Yankees having paid big bucks for the prime years, they are now waiting the expiration of the “back-end” years of players like CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, and Alex Rodriguez.
Fun Questions
- You walk into a bar or a club where music is playing and everyone is dancing. All of a sudden the music completely stops and everyone is focused on you. The DJ plays a song. It’s your jam. What song is it?
- If the Yankees do indeed trade Chapman for Gleyber Torres and he eventually makes his way to the Bronx, what should be John Sterling’s home run call for Torres?
Song of the Day
I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys
It’s Backstreet is Back Week on Pinstripe Alley. You thought they were gone? Well they’re back! Plus as Greg said, because of the trade deadline and all that, this was a fitting theme for the week. Because reasons. Plus with trade season, comes trade proposals, which is basically just everyone yelling which way they want the trade to happen. “Nova for Gallo...I WANT IT THAT WAY.” As always, please link us your song of the day.
