Around the Empire
New York Daily News | Mark Feinsand: The decision to let Robinson Cano walk has been a contended one among Yankee fans. The Mariners' offer for him was indeed crazy. According to a friend of his, Cano was willing to stay in the Bronx for an eight year, $200 million deal. Of course, the Yankees declined to even offer him a hometown discount. If they had, perhaps we would not have dealt with the unbridled joy of watching the likes of Brian Roberts and Stephen Drew "play" second base. Sigh.
Newsday | Erik Boland: Barring any new injury or complication, Alex Rodriguez is set to rejoin the team tonight. Carlos Beltran has been keeping A-Rod's DH spot warm. Of course by "warm," I mean "red hot." Beltran's offensive numbers, in what should be his natural position, have been stellar. That's not to say that his offense won't continue to excel when A-Rod returns. We could see more DH platooning in the future though.
The Wall St. Journal | Jared Diamond: The month of April was not the best month for the Bronx Bombers. The month of May has been much better. The "formula" is working exactly as concocted and if it continues to work, there's no reason why the Yankees cannot find their way back on top. It would be really nice if Mark Teixeira joined in on the fun.
New York Post | Joel Sherman: Despite their rough start to the season, the Yankees were never that far behind the first place team. There is no clear cut favorite for the AL East. Every team has their flaws and nothing is over. With the Rays loss to the Marlins last night, the Yankees are now in 3rd place.
LoHud | Chad Jennings: Jorge Mateo has done well and is expected to move up to Double-A Trenton soon. Tyler Wade, currently on the Trenton Thunder, has also been proving his worth. The Yankees' depth at the SS position is looking good. Also, a reminder that Aaron Judge is moving ahead of schedule in the minors and to keep an eye out for recently promoted prospect Billy Fleming.
