Yankees at Tigers: Sabathia vs. Pelfrey

New, comments

The Yankees send lefty CC Sabathia to the hill to face Tigers starter Mike Pelfrey in an afternoon matchup.

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

CC Sabathia will get his first chance to justify his spot in the rotation against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon, facing off against former Minnesota Twin Mike Pelfrey. The Tigers lineup is dominated by right-handed hitters who can turn mistakes into souvenirs, so CC will need to hit his spots to give his team a fighting chance.

Mike Pelfrey has a solid career groundball rate of 48.1%, but will not strike out very many hitters. Like many groundball pitchers, he is susceptible to a high opposing BABIP, so the Yankees should look to shoot line drives into the gap, especially with the spacious Comerica Park outfield.

Unfortunately, the Yankees won't be spared from Mother Nature on Saturday. In addition to the potential overnight snow showers, the temperature is expected to be in the 30's yet again. Fans can catch today's action on the YES Network or on MLB Network, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:10 EST. Hopefully CC can navigate a tough Tigers lineup and the Yankees can get to Mike Pelfrey, in order to give themselves a chance to win the series on Sunday.
