Today is a day of optimism for a lot of fans. The trades and free agent signings of the preseason have passed us by. The preseason is now over with, except for the Cubs and the Angels at least. Weird how that worked out. Either way, it all begins today. Six teams play Game 1 of 162. The 2016 season is here.
The first game of the day begins right now. The St. Louis Cardinals, last year's NL Central division winner, will begin their season at PNC Park to face the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Bucs were one of the two Wild Card teams of last year, the other being the Chicago Cubs. In the Wild Card elimination game, the Cubs defeated the Pirates 4-0 behind the brilliant pitching of Cubs' ace Jake Arrieta. Arrieta held the Pirates to no runs and five hits over nine innings. The Cubs then went on to beat the Cardinals in the NLDS. It is sure to be another heated season in the NL Central between these three teams. Adam Wainwright will face off against Francisco Liriano. This game will be broadcast on ESPN and MLB.tv.
The second game of the day should interest Yankee fans a bit. Two of our AL East division rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays, will start their seasons off at 4PM in Tropicana Field. No team should have to start their season off at the Trop, but here we are. The Rays finished the season two games under .500, winding up in 4th place. The Blue Jays, powered by an absolute juggernaut of an offense, were the AL East division winners last season, making it all the way to the ALCS where they eventually lost to the Kansas City Royals. Both teams will send young, incredible pitchers to the mound in this afternoon's game. Chris Archer will start for the Rays while the Blue Jays send Marcus Stroman to face him. This game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and MLB.tv.
Our final game of the evening will feature a rematch between the 2016 AL and NL Champions. The New York Mets return to Kauffman Stadium to take on the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals at 8:30PM. I'll let Frank Thomas provide the recap of last year's World Series.
The Big Hurt pretty much says it all right there. Due to said lack of playing well, the Mets will have to watch as the Royals raise their first World Series championship banner in thirty years. This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the last time the Mets won a World Series championship of their own. That's sure to be on their mind as they look to return to the big dance, much like the Royals did after their loss to the Giants in 2014. Matt Harvey will take the mound for our baseball cousins from Queens while Edinson Volquez starts for the Royals. This game will be broadcast on ESPN and MLB.tv.

Since future GOTDs will probably be more baseball related, I figured I'd end the preseason with a Chainsaw Drone!

Take Me Out To The Ballgame by Bernie Williams
It's Opening Week on Pinstripe Alley. What better way to start off the week than with this awesome rendition of Take Me Out To The Ballgame by former Yankee great Bernie Williams. As always, please link us your song of the day.
There's not much more to say. The 2016 regular season begins today. Yankee fans will have to wait until tomorrow for their opening day. For now though, real baseball will be on our screens once again. It's about time!
