Around the Empire

New York Daily News | Mark Feinsand: The Yankees have officially made offers to closers Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen. The Yankees have long preferred Chapman, but after hearing his six-year demands, it seems they’re opening up the possibility of Jansen. However, it’s known that the Yankees do covet their draft pick, so there is always the chance they’re just playing Jansen against Chapman in order to get Chapman to come down on his terms.

Newsday | Erik Boland: The Yankees will pay RE2PECT (or Retoopect) to one of their legends on May 14th, 2017. Derek Jeter’s number 2 will officially be retired by the Yankees. In case there was ever any doubt, no one will ever wear Jeter’s number in Yankee history. Sorry, Kyle Holder I thought you really had a chance here. In addition to retiring his number, the Yankees will also unveil Jeter’s Monument Park plaque.

New York Post | George A. King III: Brian Cashman says that the basic reason for the Holliday signing comes down to one thing: the 2016 Yankees didn’t score enough and needed a DH to help that. He also talks about his fears that “too many” Yankees will participate in the upcoming WBC. Thus far Dellin Betances (D.R.) is the only Yankee confirmed to play, however Masahiro Tanaka (Japan) is also a strong candidate to participate. Gary Sanchez (D.R.), Didi Gregorius (Netherlands), and Luis Cessa (Mexico) are also candidates to participate.

NJ.com | Randy Miller: After extremely successful stints at the Arizona Fall League, Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar were named to the MLB Top Prospects Team. Torres, who was the AFL MVP, made the team as a shortstop and Andujar, who is a third baseman, joined the team as a designated hitter. The future of the left side of the infield looks bright for the Yankees. #GleyberGood.

New York Post | Fred Kerber: Randy Levine, team president and man who should never speak, spoke yesterday at a press conference to announce the Pinstripe Bowl on December 28th. The biggest news of this is probably that he spoke without saying anything offensive or awful. What he did say, however, is that in his 17 years as team president this is the deepest farm system the Yankees have had. Now my favorite part. When asked about Aroldis Chapman, “I’m not going to comment on that. Those are questions for Brian,” our little boy is growing up.

Fun Questions

  • The Yankees have a lot of retired numbers. Are all of them deserving? Which would you unretire?
  • Thoughts on Chris Sale now joining the Red Sox?

Song of the Day

Colder Weather by Zac Brown Band

It’s Winter Meetings Week on Pinstripe Alley. The Winter Meetings are always a fun time full of crazy deals, trades, and rumors. Some might wish it was always Winter Meetings week, but unfortunately you have to wait for the colder weather. At least there’s baseball in the warmer weather to occupy our time until the colder weather. As always, please link us your song of the day.
