Around the Empire
LoHud Yankees Blog | Chad Jennings: The Yankees have added pitcher Nestor Cortes to their list of Arizona Fall League players. Cortes started the year in Low-A Charleston but made his way all the way up to Scranton for a start. Normally it would be too late to add him to the AFL roster, but another organization’s pitcher was injured so Cortes was allowed to take his spot. Brody Koerner, who split time between Charleston and Tampa, was already on the Scottsdale roster and will slide into the rotation while Cortes will take Koerner’s bullpen spot.
New York Post | Ken Davidoff: Clint Frazier and Justus Sheffield have some big shoes to fill. Unsurprisingly, Andrew Miller has been absolutely dominant for Cleveland as they now have secured a berth to the World Series with Miller picking up ALCS MVP honors along the way. If Cleveland ends up winning the World Series for the first time since 1948, this trade will be worth it on their end so here’s hoping that the two big pieces the Yankees got for him will end up making the trade good for both teams. To be fair, both Frazier and Sheffield have been impressive thus far. How can you not love a guy whose nickname is Red Thunder?!
LoHud Yankees Blog | Chad Jennings: Rob Refsnyder’s role with the team going forward will most certainly be one of the mysteries of the winter. He struggled with the bat, and obviously hasn’t found a defensive home, but he was able to fake it enough to give the Yankees some versatility. He says that not playing everyday possibly attributed to his slow bat. Hopefully he learned from that experience and will be able to learn how to contribute offensively even if he’s not playing everyday.
Sports Illustrated: Not an article here, but on what would have been Mickey Mantle’s 85th birthday Sports Illustrated found some rare photos of The Mick. Check ‘em out, some pretty cool stuff.
