The Yankees came into yesterday afternoon a poor 1-4 against the Indians on the season, but they pulled away with a victory in honor of Jorge Posada day. Well, we have another "day" on our hands, and it's for Andy Pettitte. As we all know, Pettitte was one of the greatest pitchers in Yankees history, putting up a career 117 ERA+ over 18 seasons.
Today, another (former) Yankee great in CC Sabathia will start for the Yankees, and he's been hoping to get his season back on track as of late. He's had some good starts mixed in lately, but he's still had a 4.58 ERA/5.02 FIP over the past month. It'd be nice of him to step it up for Andy, but I'm not holding my breath.
The lineup is pretty similar to yesterday; Mark Teixeira is obviously still out of the lineup and Greg Bird is filling in, Alex Rodriguez gets yet another day off, and John Ryan Murphy once again fills in at catcher as Brian McCann gets another day as the designated hitter. It's the dog days of summer, and hopefully these days of rest will rejuvenate the team for their final month of the regular season.
Go Yankees, go baseball, and go Andy Pettitte.
