Moves That Will Elevate The New York Yankees

The AL East is a dogfight between Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Toronto and New York. Every team is flawed, and the New York Yankees have their own sets of weaknesses that need to be fixed. Here are some players that would elevate the New York Yankees to legitimate contenders

Need: Consistent No.3 starter

Solution(s): Scott Kazmir (Oakland A's), Yovani Gallardo (Texas Rangers)

Scott Kazmir has been a massive bargain for Billy Beane when he signed that 2 year, 22 million deal. He pitched to 3.55 ERA in 2014, and has bettered that to 2.79 in 2015. His FIP has held steady (3.37 and 3.35). His contract ends after the year, and even though Billy Beane would want to maximize his value, the Yankees would not really have to give up too much to get him

Yovani Gallardo has quietly become one of the better arms in the league. An ERA of 2.72 would be best of any New York starter (save for Ivan Nova, who has made only 2 starts). His 53.1 % Ground Ball rate helps him in the hitter friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Texas is on the hook for only 10 million of his 14 million contract, so the Yankees would be paying even less if they choose to get him. His availability would depend on whether the Texas Rangers slip far enough from the postseason race to part with him.

Need: Second base

Solution(s): Trade for Yangervis Solarte (San Diego). platoon with Jose Pirela or Robert Refsnyder

If the Yankees really want to compete, then they must get rid of Stephen Drew immediately. His 11 home runs are nice, but that's about the only positive thing he has going for him. Now, our old pal Solarte's Padres aren't doing that well in the NL West, and getting him back would boost our formidable offense. He has extreme platoon splits this year (.681 OPS vs RHP, .529 vs LHP). Therefore, he'd require a platoon partner. Fortunately, the Yankees have two candidates, Rob Refsnyder and Jose Pirela. Both of their defense is suspect, but with more consistent at bats, their offense would bring a positive net value.
