New York Yankees at Houston Astros: Nathan Eovaldi vs. Vincent Velasquez

Last night, the Yankees faced an excellent pitcher and lost. That's going to happen; when you play 162 games a year, you're bound to have a handful that are nearly impossible to win when you face a great pitcher under the right (or, wrong) circumstances. And Dallas Keuchel isn't just a good pitcher--he's great. Some would even say he's the best pitcher in baseball. But that is neither here nor there. Tonight the Yankees will face Vincent Velasquez, a rookie pitcher who is, for all intents and purposes, still a prospect. Kiley McDaniel, for one, gives him an overall value at 60, and that's a number two starter or thereabouts. He is nowhere near that yet, nor is he even accustomed to major league hitting, but this is the type of talent the Yankees will be facing.

The lineup gets a bit of a shakeup, and in the best way possible against a right-handed pitcher. Joe Girardi put eight left-handed hitters in the lineup, and I'm sure he would love to swap out Chris Young for a left-handed bat. The only problem is that they are pretty much out of outfielders, and they're hoping that problem is alleviated once Jacoby Ellsbury returns. Alex Rodriguez gets the day off, and this is likely a combination of a regular day off and a right-handed pitcher on the mound.

Nathan Eovaldi will take the ball for the Yankees tonight, and he's definitely struggled thus far. FIP likes him--he's about a one-win pitcher by that measure--but his poor ERA (4.95) and DRA (4.95) suggest that he has probably been closer to replacement level. Considering the dynamic stuff he actually has, that's a disappointment. Part of being a young pitcher is making adjustments, and that's exactly what he'll have to do.
