The Yankees come into this series with the Marlins atop the AL East division, but only by a technicality. Even though the Yankees and Rays are "tied" for the division lead, the Yankees at 34-28 beats the Rays' 35-29 by winning percentage. But that is neither here nor there. What really matters is winning each game, especially when facing lesser opponents. The Marlins are absolutely lesser opponents; at 27-37 and fourth in the NL East, the Marlins have been in a downward spiral that includes making their general manager their on-field manager, designating Jarrod Saltalamacchia for assignment, and witnessing an ugly regression from both Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich. Their only shining lights have been Dee Gordon (who has slowly been regressing to league-average offense) and Giancarlo Stanton, who has been one of the best players in the National League.
Tonight the Yankees will face Tom Koehler, who hasn't had much success in his 419.2 professional innings. He has put up a career line of 110 ERA-, 115 FIP-, and -0.9 WARP. He's essentially a replacement level pitcher, and these are the guys the Yankees need to beat up on. The lineup is missing Alex Rodriguez, who looks to be taking a day off because of the lack of designated hitter, and Carlos Beltran has been swapped out for Garrett Jones, who has the platoon advantage. Mason Williams will also get the start in center field, and he'll try to continue the hot hitting that got him on to the roster.
The game will start at 7:10 PM EST, and you can catch it on MLB.tv, WPIX, or WFAN radio. Go Yankees, go baseball.
