Everyone's doing it their own way

For the first time since the qualifying offer system was put in place, a free agent has accepted the offer. Not just one but three free agents accepted the offer this time around. The Dodgers' Brett Anderson, the Orioles' Matt Wieters, and the Astros' Colby Rasmus each accepted their offers by the 4pm deadline yesterday. Let's hope that the Astros at least included a shower clause in their offer to Rasmus.

In other baseball news, the Boston Red Sox made some news yesterday by pulling off a major trade with the San Diego Padres to acquire closer Craig Kimbrel. While it's unfortunate that the Yankees will now have to deal with Kimbrel 19 times a year, the Red Sox gave up quite a haul to acquire a closer and are taking on his entire salary. So overall, as of right now, the trade looks better for the Padres than it does the Red Sox, so yay? Although it would be a lot better if Kimbrel was all of a sudden bad so the Yankees don't have to worry about him locking down games for their rivals. But the real question is did Dombrowski bite off more than he could chew?

The Yankees have been relatively quiet since trading John Ryan Murphy to the Twins for Aaron Hicks. Let's see if Ninja Cashman makes some sneaky moves out of nowhere. One has to wonder if he's thinking more and more about trading closer Andrew Miller after seeing what the Padres were able to get for Kimbrel. While Miller would be missed, if he could get someone to pay that much for his closer at least Dellin Betances would be ready and available to take on the closer's role from Miller. But this is all just speculation for now, what isn't speculation is that the Spring Training schedule was released yesterday so even though we closer to the end of the last baseball season than the start of the new season, at least the countdown has begun.

Greg wins the HMM for this gem from yesterday's COTD thread.

Fun Questions

  • Would you feel better about potentially losing Andrew Miller in a trade if the Yankees got a return similar to what the Padres received?
  • Of the 8 non-Earth planets in our solar system (Oh yes, I said 8. Take that, Pluto haters), which one would you like to visit most if you could?

Song of the Day

My Way by Frank Sinatra

It's the final day of Frank Sinatra week on Pinstripe Alley. You might this remember this particular song from a Gatorade commercial that aired last year. I didn't cry after re-watching that. Oh no, not me. I did it my way...okay fine. I've loved, I've laughed and cried. I've had my fill, my share of losing (Jeter). And now, as the tears subside, I find it all so amusing. As always, please link us your song of the day.

Feel free to use this as your open thread for the day. What're your thoughts on the Red Sox trade? Does Colby Rasmus shower?
