Yankees 2, Red Sox 9: More of the same

If this recap reads anything like yesterday's recap, it's because this game was somewhat similar to yesterday's.  Red Sox pile up runs on the Yankees' starter.  Yankees' offense fails to do much of anything.  Red Sox come away with a win.  The Yankees took an early lead, but the Red Sox took it right back and continued adding runs.  And in the end, Boston came away with a 9-2 win.

The Yankees quickly opened the scoring in the top of the first.  Curtis Granderson drew a lead-off walk to start the game.  Clay Buchholz threw away a pick-off attempt, which allowed Granderson to move all the way to third.  Alex Rodriguez's ground out scored Granderson.  Without recording a hit, the Yankees had a lead.

Said lead did not last very long.  In the bottom of the first, Daniel Nava hit a one-out double and came around to score on a David Ortiz single.  That tied the game at one.  Two batters later, Mike Napoli hit a home run to straight-away center.  Despite the Yankees striking first, the Red Sox had opened up a 3-1 lead.

Boston added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth.  Napoli led off the inning with a walk.  Jarrod Saltalamacchia came up next.  He grounded into a force out at second.  Brendan Ryan's throw to first hit off Napoli's hand, which allowed Saltalamacchia to avoid the double play and be safe at firist.  After a passed ball that moved Saltalamacchia to second (Chris Stewart gonna Chris Stewart), Stephen Drew grounded out, moving Saltalamacchia up another base.  Xander Bogaerts then drew a walk.  That brought Jackie Bradley Jr. to the plate.  During that at bat, Bogaerts stole second.  Ryan couldn't handle Stewart's throw, which allowed Saltalamacchia to score.  That made the score 4-1.

An inning later, the Red Sox tacked on more.  Pedroia led off the inning by drawing a walk.  That was followed by Nava hitting a ground-rule double.  The Yankees elected to intentionally walk Ortiz, which loaded the bases with still no one out.  Mike Carp then came to the plate.  Nova quickly got Carp in an 0-2 hole, but his third pitch hit Carp on the foot.  That brought home another run and made the score 5-1.

The hit by pitch spelled the end of Nova's day.  He went four innings, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks.  Adam Warren came in and got out of the jam, keeping the score at 5-1.

The Red Sox only continued  to add more in the sixth.  With Warren still in, Bogaerts led off with a double and scored two batters later when Nava singled.  With Ortiz due up, Warren was pulled and Cesar Cabral came in.  Ortiz singled home a run to make it 7-1.  Cabral would only face one batter.  Girardi quickly went back to the bullpen and Joba Chamberlain came in next.  Joba was somehow the person to get out of the inning, keeping the score at 7-1.  Go figure.

Mike Zagurski made an appearance in the seventh, as did David Phelps.  That inning ended in another two runs for Boston.  Dellin Betances looked pretty good in throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth.

After the early run, the Yankee offense didn't do much of note.  They had a decent chance to add runs in the seventh when both Ichiro Suzuki and Ryan (who also made two really nice defensive plays) both singled.  But true to form, Stewart came up and grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The Yankees did end up adding a run in the ninth, though.  Lyle Overbay drew a one-out walk, followed by Mark Reynolds grounding into a force out at second.  During the next at bat, Reynolds was able to move up a base due to defensive indifference, and came around to score on a single by Ichiro.  But in the end, the Red Sox bullpen finished off what Buchholz started, and the Red Sox won 9-2.  In his final game in Fenway, Mariano Rivera would not be needed.

The Yankees have an off-day tomorrow.  Following that is a series in Toronto against the Blue Jays.  Andy Pettitte will get the start in the series opener.
