The Yankees drafted South Carolina lefty Tyler Webb in the 10th round to finish off the second day of the draft. The 6' 6 225 lbs. Virginia native is a Tommy John surgery survivor and has been described as a finesse lefty. Scouts worry about his fluctuating velocity that might stem from a heavy workload. Baseball America says that his 90 mph fastball and curveball are quality pitches and he has shown great poise in pressure situations.
He was on the third-team All-America from Collegiate Baseball and was among the SEC leaders in 16 saves in 2013. In 2013 Webb has a ridiculous 12.88 K/9 and a good 2.72 BB/9 to go along with a 1.24 ERA in 36.1 innings. He has not allowed a run in 24 of his 28 appearances this year and, in his career 94 relief appearances, he has not allowed a run in 74 of them. He holds the South Carolina record for 106 appearances over four seasons. He has competed in the College World Series with the University of South Carolina, winning it all in 2010 and 2011, and has not given up a run in Omaha over three seasons.
Webb was drafted by the Reds in the 48th round of the 2011 draft, but did not sign. He looks like another one of Damon Oppenheimer's high strikeout relievers that the Yankees love to take in the middle rounds. He might not have velocity, but he collects a lot of strikeouts and, as a lefty, he could be a real weapon out of the bullpen. The biggest concern with him is health, considering he was overworked and has already needed surgery.
