Yankees to sign Hideki Matsui to a one-day deal

Chris McGrath

Godzilla is coming home, y'all. Hideki Matsui, the 2009 World Series MVP, announced his plans to retire this winter, but the Yankees will be giving him a one-day contract so that he can ceremoniously retire as a member of the Yankees, per George King. A Matsui bobblehead promotion was already scheduled at the Stadium for July 28th, which could line up perfectly for them to do his one-day deal and going away party on that day.

It will be nice to send Godzilla off into retirement as a Yankee, even if one-day deals are slightly gimmicky on paper. I can make an exception for one of the more popular fan favorites I grew up watching.
