Ivan Nova left yesterday's game in the third inning because of elbow pain, which he apparently felt before the second inning and wanted a chance to work out. Obviously, the Yankees saw something they didn't like and they immediately pulled him and went for testing. Thankfully it looks like his elbow is fine, but he has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right triceps. While injury is never good, this seems to be a best case scenario because it means there is nothing wrong with his elbow and he will heal. Nova missed time last season with inflammation in his rotator cuff, so you have to wonder if this is going to be a thing throughout his career or if it's simply bad luck.
As of right now, David Phelps, who came in for him yesterday and struck out nine batters in four innings, will replace Nova in the rotation. Derek Jeter has finally been placed on the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for Vidal Nuno and will come up to replace Nova on the 25-man roster. Nuno, a lefty, will be in the bullpen where he can be used for match ups and as a longman, along with Adam Warren.
Francisco Cervelli also left last night's game after only five pitches, when he was hit by a pitch on his throwing hand. It was determined that it was broken and would ned surgery to fix. He i expected to miss about six week, which would be sometime in June. Austin Romine has been called up from Triple-A, but Chris Stewart will be starting today's game.
Kevin Youkilis has missed a week due to lower back discomfort, but it appears they are going to try to get him into today's game. If he feels alright after batting practice he will play, otherwise he will clearly need to be put on he disabled list as well. The only infielder currently on the 40-man roster is third baseman/second baseman Corban Joseph.
