Baby Bomber Recap 4/9/13: Cito Culver homers twice. No, really.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders: L 1-2 vs. Rochester Red Wings

Melky Mesa 0-4, 2 K
Corban Joseph 1-2, 2 BB
Zoilo Almonte 1-4, 2 K
Cody Johnson 0-3, 3 K
Austin Romine 2-4, 2 K - batting .389 to start the season
Addison Maruszak 1-3, 2B, BB

Vidal Nuno 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 6 K - 60 of 85 pitches for strikes
Mark Montgomery 2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 5 K - struck out the side after a leadoff single in his first inning

Vidal Nuno pitched great and Mark Montgomery was very good in his first inning of work, but he allowed a solo home run in his second inning that would spell doom for the RailRiders by breaking a 1-1 tie. Dellin Betances gets the start for Scranton today at 6:36 pm.

Double-A Trenton Thunder: W 5-1 vs. New Hampshire Fisher Cats

Slade Heathcott 1-4, BB - batting .167 to start the year
Ramon Flores 0-4, BB
Tyler Austin 0-5, 2 K
JR Murphy 3-5
Neil Medchill 0-4, BB, 2 K - 7 for his last 19
Jose Pirela 1-4, 3B, RBI, K
Casey Stevenson 4-4, 3 RBI

Caleb Cotham 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HBP - 4 groundouts and 4 flyouts
Jeremy Bleich 3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K - 26 of 43 pitches for strikes
Tom Kahnle 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, BB, 2 K

The prolific Thunder offense wasn't even necessary to take care of New Hampshire thanks to shutdown pitching from all three Trenton pitchers. Tyler Austin took a rare 0-5 with two strikeouts, though. Perhaps he is human after all. Nik Turley tries to right himself this today in a rare 10:35 am start against the Fisher Cats.

High-A Tampa Yankees: W 4-2 vs. Dunedin Blue Jays

Mason Williams 0-3, 2 BB, K
Angelo Gumbs 0-3, BB, SB
Ben Gamel 1-3, 2B, BB, K - batting .429 to start the season
Gary Sanchez 1-4, 2B, K
Matt Snyder 1-4, 2B, K
Carmen Angelini 2-3, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, HBP
Ali Castillo 1-4, CS

Scottie Allen 6 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB(!!), 6 K, WP
Fred Lewis 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 K
Nick Goody 1 IP, 1 H, BB, 2 K, WP

The Yankees survived a bases loaded threat by the Blue Jays in the bottom of the ninth inning, but managed to pull out the win. Bryan Mitchell will try to secure the series win on the pitching side for the Yankees today at 6:30 pm.

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs: W 10-7 vs. West Virginia Power

Cito Culver 2-6, 2 HR (!!), 3 RBI, K - matches last season's HR total
Rob Refsnyder 2-6, RBI, K, 2 SB, E4 - 9 for his last 23
Greg Bird 1-6, 3 K
Dante Bichette Jr. 1-3, 3 BB, K
Yeicok Calderon 3-6, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, K
Kelvin De Leon 2-6, 2B, RBI, 2 K
Taylor Dugas 1-5, 2B, SB

Daniel Camarena 4 IP, 11 H, 6 R/5 ER, BB - 9 groundouts, 1 fly out
Ben Paullus 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, BB, 2 K
Dietrich Enns 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R/0 ER, BB, 4 K
Brett Gerritse 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 K

The RiverDogs got some unexpected power from Cito Culver, and scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning to get past the West Virginia Power. Culver matched last year's home run total in one night, so enjoy this random outburst. It may never happen again. Cesar Vargas gets the start for Charleston today at 10:30 am.
