Yankees acquire Vernon Wells for Exicardo Cayones and Kramer Sneed

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

It has finally been revealed who the Yankees will be sending to the Angels for Vernon Wells. Besides taking on part of Wells' $42M contract, the Yankees will send over Exicardo Cayones and Kramer Sneed. For those that remember, Cayones came over from the Pirates in the A.J. Burnett deal and put up a .228/.374/.291 batting line in Staten Island last year as a 21-year-old. Sneed, a 32nd round pick from 2010, is a 24-year-old left handed pitcher who had a 5.37 ERA, a 6.9 K/9 and a 5.7 BB/9 at Tampa in 2012.

Vernon Wells has been hanging around the Yankees clubhouse today even though no official trade had been announced. He was penciled in to take batting practice and workout with the team. He was issued #56 and will be making his team debut tonight against the Astros.

While no one likes Vernon Wells, it is good to see that the Yankees didn't give up anything worthwhile for him. It would have been nice to get some kind of value from the Burnett deal, especially since it's actually being used to bring in another bad contract.

The Yankees' moves are not done yet. They still need to make room for Wells on the 40-man roster and while moving Cesar Cabral to the 60 would have cleared room, the organization decided to claim reliever Dan Otero instead. Otero could quickly be DFA'd himself, but more moves are likely to follow.

Update from Andrew: The Yankees will pay $11.5 million of Wells's deal this year and $2.5 million next year, which is not much of a hit on the $189 mil payroll plan, I guess.
