The Yankees only managed one hit in tonight's game. That's really all you need to know to know that the game did not go well for our ball club of choice, but their downfall actually came in one rough inning for starting pitcher David Phelps. In 3.2 innings, Phelps struck out six and allowed three walks and five hits, leading to five runs. Three runs came on a double by Drew Butera, one on a sac fly, and another after Juan Cedeno let Phelps' runner score when he entered the game. Only four of the runs were earned and Phelps committed a fielding error himself on a botched pickoff that got by Kevin Youkilis at first base. Robinson Cano and Brett Gardner also committed fielding errors in the game.
Cedeno allowed a walk and hit in his relief of Phelps. Mariano Rivera followed out of the bullpen and allowed his first hit this spring, which he followed with three straight strikeouts to end the inning. David Robertson, David Aardsma, Boone Logan, and Preston Claiborne completed the reliever procession with only Logan allowing another Minnesota run after Phelps' poor fourth inning.
Ultimately, it would not matter, as the Yankees only managed one hit off of the Twins' pitchers. Robinson Cano returned to camp after tearing through the World Baseball Classic to single and score the Yankees' only run of the night on an error in the outfield by Joe Benson off the bat of Travis Hafner. The only other Yankees to reach base were Brett Gardner, Youkilis, and Hafner by way of walks, and Walter Ibarra, who was hit by a pitch.
So, that was definitely a game to forget and soon. The Yankees will travel to Fort Myers tomorrow at 1 p.m. to take on the Twins yet again. Ivan Nova will be starting opposite Vance Worley on the mound.
