Yankees extend qualifying offer to Cano, Kuroda, Granderson

The Yankees have officially extended qualifying offers to Robinson Cano, Hiroki Kuroda, and Curtis Granderson. No qualifying offer for Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain. Players now have six days to either accept the $14.1 million one-year contract or decline, become a free agent, and be linked to draft compensation.

Cano was completely expected and will decline. Hiroki Kuroda made $15 million this season, so if he accepts, he'll be taking a small pay cut. Team will not likely be interested in sacrificing a draft pick for the 38-year-old, so we may just have to wait and see if he stays or retires.

The Yankees extended a QO to Curtis Granderson after an unusually long amount of discussion. Granderson's 2013 was a lost cause due to freak injuries, so there's not much to be concerned about there. He made $15 million, so he'd be taking a pay cut, so it seems like it's a win-win situations for the Yankees. If he accepts, they have a 40-home run potential player for one year and can push out Vernon Wells. If he declines, they get a draft pick and could still re-sign him if they feel like it. The uncertainty made no sense and if they decided against making an offer there would have been something very wrong with the front office's decision-making.
