Baseball America ranks Yankees with the third best draft

Jeff Gross

Baseball America released their 2013 Draft report card to give a first impression of this most recent draft class. The Yankees had the third best draft out of any team, coming only behind the Pirates and Diamondbacks. The Athletics and Rockies rounded out the top five.

The Yankees appeared in other categories as well. One being the top five best power hitting prospects. Aaron Judge, who the Yankees drafted 32nd overall in the first round was listed as the fifth best power hitter from the draft. Judge signed late and suffered a quad injury while working out at the Tampa complex and never got into a game, but he should be healthy and ready to go next spring. He will likely start off playing for Short Season Staten Island with the potential to move up quickly if his projected power presents itself.

The Yankees' second round pick, second baseman Gosuke Katoh had the third best debut of any high school player from the draft. Katoh surprised everyone by hitting .310/.402/.522 with six home runs and a 12.6% walk rate in 215 plate appearances in rookie ball. As a 19-year-old he could start next season in Low-A Charleston if Angelo Gumbs gets moved back up to High-A Tampa, after a mid-season demotion in 2013, and the Yankees decide to accelerate Rob Refsnyder into Double-A.
