This was suppose to be a pitching duel between Jered Weaver and Ivan Nova. I think it's safe to say that was not the case this afternoon as the Angels defeated the Yankees 10-8 and saved themselves from the sweep. Offense, not the bird, was the word today as both teams combined for eighteen runs, twenty seven hits, and eight home runs. Definitely not a pitcher's duel. The dingers came immediately as Ivan Nova gave up back to back homers to Erick Aybar and Albert Pujols. A-Rod then delivered an two run A-Bomb to counter those dingers.

Nova just did not have his best stuff this afternoon. I blame the humidity. I blame the humidity for a lot of things. He went six innings and gave up three home runs, six earned runs and nine hits while striking out three and walking two. Stupid humidity. Our vaunted bullpen did not have their best stuff as well. To be fair though, it's hard to consider Chad Qualls as a vaunted member of the bullpen just yet. Or ever. Replacement Cory Wade came in for 1.1 innings and proceeded to give up four hits and three earned runs. Those runs would matter later on in the game. Never trust anyone named Chad in your bullpen!

The Yankees offense would not quit though. Down 10-5 coming into the 9th inning, the Yankees rallied back to within two runs thanks to a two run Teixeira homer and a bases loaded walk to Granderson. The Angels would need to use three relievers to get out of the inning. An A-Rod pop-out would stop the Yankees from walking off. Ernesto Frieri is no pushover and the Yankees managed to score off of him. The offense still looks promising, except for you-know-who.

More after the jump

Curtis Granderson had a pretty good afternoon on offense and defense. Grandy hit one of those eight dingers I mentioned and he made two spectacular catches in the 3rd and 6th inning to prevent some more runs from being scored.

Another baserunning blunder today as Cano and A-Rod fell for the balk pickoff move which usually never works. Cano got picked off of first and then A-Rod got thrown out at home. A baserunning double play. Shameful.

The Yankees will face the Blue Jays tomorrow. They will face the Blue Jays many times during the second half.
