Oh, he's something sort of "Grandish" indeed.
Curtis Granderson started his evening with three home runs: a solo shot, a two-run bomb and a solo line drive over the wall, that ultimately helped the Yankees pick up a 7-6 win. With the victory, the Yankees improved their record to 7-6 and split the series with the Minnesota Twins.
Granderson is the first Yankee to hit three home runs in a game since Alex Rodriguez accomplished the feat on August 14, 2010, in Kauffman Stadium against the Kansas City Royals. Granderson went 5-5 tonight, adding two singles to his three home runs; it was the first 5-5 night of his career.
Mark Teixeira managed to hit his first homer of the year, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the first that brought the Yankees within one at 4-3.
Phil Hughes opened the game by allowing four runs on three hits. Eduardo Nunez' hideous throwing error (Chuck Knoblach-esque) didn't help, but Hughes settled down during innings two through five. In the sixth, Justin Morneau led off with a walk before Ryan Doumit crushed a two-run home run to bring the Twins within one.
New York's fourth run of the night came on an RBI single by Derek Jeter, his only hit of the night that tied the game 4-4.
The Yankee bullpen was a savior yet again: Boone Logan, Rafael Soriano, David Robertson and Mariano Rivera combined for 3.2 scoreless innings of four hit, four K ball.
New York will travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox tomorrow starting at 3:05. It's Ivan Nova vs. Clay Buchholz.
Comment of the game: Briceratops gives a riveting recap of the top half of the first inning.
