Phil Hughes didn't help his case much to win the Yankees' fifth starter spot today. He allowed two earned runs on four hits (along with a strikeout and no walks) and didn't even make it through a second inning. His velocity was good for this time of year though, hitting 93 MPH on the radar gun. Hughes said the ball came out of his hand "nicely," while Francisco Cervelli used the word "jumping." Either way, it didn't translate into on-field results.
CC Sabathia preceded Hughes and pitched decently enough for his first outing: 2 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 BB, 1 K. RHP Brett Marshall (1.2 IP, 0 ER), RHP Graham Stoneburner (2 IP, 1 ER) and RHP Chase Whitley (1 IP, 3 ER) closed out the affair.
The lineup tallied eight hits, including doubles by RF Justin Maxwell and 2B David Adams. Derek Jeter, A-Rod and Mark Teixeira had a single apiece while Robbie Cano, Andruw Jones and Frankie Cervelli went hit-less. A-Rod and Tex also committed fielding errors.
Pittsburgh's new $51.5 million man had two hits (including a double) and two RBI.
Newcomer Hiroki Kuroda makes his first pinstriped appearance tomorrow against James Shields and the Rays. Gametime is 1:05 p.m.
