While the weather tonight was beautiful at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the outcome of tonight's game was not as beautiful for the Bombers as they lose 4-3 to the Baltimore Orioles. David Phelps went 5 innings tonight, striking out 4, giving up 2 earned runs and 7 hits. At this point, Phelps is probably fighting for a long relief role on the major league squad but it is still up in the air if he will indeed get it. His competition, D.J. Mitchell, also pitched tonight and he went 2.1 innings, walking 2 batters, striking out 3, and gave up 2 hits and 1 run. He is credited with the loss tonight. Mo was pretty much Mo. Why he even has Spring Training at this point is beyond me.
The hitting was pretty decent tonight as the Yankees combined for 3 runs and 8 hits. Two of those runs and two of the hits came from Raul Ibanez in which one of those hits and RBI's was a home run. Seeing as how he's pretty much guaranteed a spot on the roster, here's hoping he can keep this up, and not just because I love seeing dingers! Derek Jeter contributed the other RBI. Tex, A-Rod, and Nunez looked good at the plate as well today and it's definitely encouraging to see. All in all, as Spring Training begins to wind down as the Yankees get ready for the regular season, everything seems to be looking up right now.
Michael Pineda will be under the microscope, pitching against the Philles tomorrow night at GMS Field at 7:05 PM. There is also a chance that Nick Swisher will play in that game as well, signaling his return.
