"I'm not going to lie. I personally think I'm much better than Raul!" -Zoilo Almonte shockingly and egotistically responds to reporters about how his Spring Training is progressing

Greetings my fellow PSAers. I hope some of you can come off the Brackets hype long enough to remember that Spring Training is still going on and there are still plenty of Yankees to go around. Some of them might even be single. Just sayin'

The Pinstripe Press

According to Mark Feinsand of the Daily News, Phil Hughes velocity troubles seem to possibly be a thing of the past. While I do agree that his velocity being consistent is important, I think his control was equally or more important with how he pitched. Either way, if Hughes can keep it together and Freddy continues to pitch well, it's going to make that 5th starter position that much more difficult to choose.

Mariano Rivera, famed Yankees closer with the dreamy cutter, pitched his first Spring Training session yesterday afternoon. It pretty much went just like the majority of his outings, masterful. Mo still thinks he's not quite at the top of his game yet, and I imagine many a pitcher wishes that his outing yesterday could be their "top of their game." As the article also points out, there is still the possibility that this is his last Spring Training start with the Yankees. With such amazing command, I really see no reason why it should be. Ever.

More Yankees news after the jump...

In sadder news, Eduardo Nunez's injury to his hand is still bothering him. The test results came back negative but he still cannot swing without pain. The Yankees will give him the day off today and if he can take pain-free batting practice tomorrow then we'll probably see him in the lineup against the Red Sox. Here's hoping that Nunez is okay.

I found this article in the Wall St. Journal interesting. It claims that according to the math, the teams that really benefit from the new Wild Card system are the elite teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox. Apparently the Yankees now have a 94% chance of making the playoffs and other teams like them chances increase as well, but the teams with significantly lower payrolls still have the same little chance they did to make it. It still shows that winning the division gives you a better statistical chance to have a chance to win the World Series, so hurray I guess.

Also, LoHud had this nice piece on my favorite named prospect Zoilo Almonte and how he is definitely impressing the Yankees this Spring Training. These are always nice stories to see coming out of Spring Training. Who knows what will come from it, so right now if you are a fan just sit back and enjoy the ride. I know I am.

The Yankees face the soon to be AL bound Astros tonight at 7PM. The game will not be televised.
