Yankees News and Notes: Let’s Get Physical

New, comments

A.J. Burnett won't be reporting to Steinbrenner Field on Sunday. Instead, he'll be taking a physical for the Pittsburgh Pirates. On Friday, the Yankees and Pirates finally agreed to a deal that will send the enigmatic righty to the steel city in exchange for approximately $13 million in salary relief and two non-roster minor leaguers.

According to Buster Olney, scouts have been impressed by the power arm of Diego Moreno, one of the players the Yankees received from the Pirates, but they remain concerned about his makeup.

Once the Burnett deal is made official, the Yankees are expected to address vacancies in the DH role and on the bench. Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez are considered to be the respective front runners for those positions, although Johnny Damon seems to be the most qualified.

A strained forearm ended Ivan Nova’s season in game 5 of the ALDS, but the right hander has made a full recovery and enters camp with a clean bill of health. Unlike last spring when he had to win a spot on the team, Nova is now established in the rotation and can spend the exhibition season preparing for an encore to his successful rookie campaign.

Another pitcher who won’t be reporting to Tampa is Hideki Okajima, whose contract was voided after he failed a physical on Friday. Unless non-roster invitees Cesar Cabral and Mike O’Connor can quickly open some eyes, Boone Logan now seems all but assured of being the Yankees lefty specialist.

In time for Opening Day, Yankees fans will be able to purchase his and her fragrances that bear the team’s classic interlocking NY insignia.
