Ramiro Pena underwent an emergency appendectomy today, and is out for four to six weeks.
To replace Pena, the Yankees promoted infielder Brandon Laird from AAA. Laird, 23, can play first base, both corner outfield positions, and his main position, third base.
Laird seems to be the anti-Russell Martin, as he started off the season terribly, then improved and never looked back.
For those of you wondering why Jorge Vazquez is not coming to the Bronx instead of Pena, there are numerous reasons. Laird is on the 40 man roster and Vazquez is not, Laird has rapidly progressed, while Vazquez has regressed lately, and though this likely won't make a difference, Laird can play the outfield, and Vazquez can not.
Laird hit .266/.296/.415 with 10 HR and 49 RBI this year in AAA. For more information on Laird, read this.
