Following a difficult loss during yesterday's matinee, A.J. Burnett will take the ball for the Yankees this afternoon. At 39-29, the Yankees are 10 games over .500, one game shy of their season high. On the season, Burnett is 6-5 with a 4.09 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 7.0 K/9 in 88 innings pitched. He has seven quality starts.
Ryan Dempster will take the mound for the Cubs. On the season, he is 5-5 with a 5.48 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 8.5 K/9 in 87 innings pitched. Of his fifteen starts, Dempster has thrown seven quality starts.
Dempster is a three-pitch pitcher, working off of a fastball, slider, and splitter. His fastball has been below average, while his off-speed pitches have been above average. He sits around 90 mph with his fastball, and has the ability to crank it up to 91 or 92. With his off-speed stuff, his slider sits around 85 mph, and his splitter around 82 mph.

Notes:
- The Yankees are 2-2 during interleague play in 2011. They went 11-7 in 2010.
- A-Rod is 1 run shy of 1,800 runs for his career. He recently passed Ted Williams for 17th on the all time list. (The MLB Preview link is incorrect; a quick look at the all time leaders shows A-Rod is already ahead of Williams, not tied.)
- Since April 28th, Brett Gardner is hitting .353/.439/.481. He is exactly who I want leading off right now, no matter who is on the mound.
