On balance, Joe Girardi is a serious man. But the fourth-year manager was particularly stern after some unsightly baserunning opend the door to a 4-2 loss to the Tigers on Tuesday night.
"How does it affect the game?" Girardi said of the baserunning. "None of us will really know, but you hate to make foolish outs."
As for the baserunning, I'll say this: I will miss Jorge Posada when the time comes for him to walk away, but I will not miss seeing him bumble around the diamond. A total butcher.
Tonight, Freddy Garcia takes the mound opposite Max Scherzer, who is off to a 4-0 start. In addition to the locked-in Scherzer, Garcia must deal with Victor Martinez, who will be back in the lineup at designated hitter. Martinez had been on the disabled list since April 19 with a strained groin.
The Yankees enter play at 17-10, two games ahead of the Rays (16-13) in the AL East.
Tonight's lineup:
Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Brett Gardner LF
Francisco Cervelli C
