Mood Music - Soothsayer by Buckethead

Spring training is fully underway, with the New York Yankees playing their sixth game against the Tampa Bay Rays today at 1:05.  But before we get into some spring training snippets, here's something that I found very interesting:

Per Jon Heyman, during the off-season, Zack Greinke tried to convice Brian Cashman that he wanted to be a New York Yankee.

Greinke's desperation not to endure yet another losing season in Kansas City was such that he is said to have tried to convince Cashman that he wanted to come to New York. And that he could actually thrive in New York.

However, people who were briefed on that meeting said Cashman ultimately decided that Greinke's first thought about New York was probably correct -- that it wasn't the best spot for him.

It's certainly an interesting tidbit, and I don't think anyone could really know for sure if Cashman dodged a bullet or screwed the pooch with the way he chose not to seriously pursue Greinke.  Also, if you haven't read Joe Posnanski's "Being There With Greinke," I give it my highest recommendation.

  • Mark Teixeira has dumped super agent Scott Boras, and while he spoke very highly of his relationship with Boras, he was quoted as saying "I felt at times I was Mark Teixeira, Scott Boras client, instead of Mark Teixeira, baseball player."
  • Francisco Cervelli has a bruised foot and will have it X-rayed and be held out of action for at least a few days.
  • Derek Jeter is still adjusting to the tinkering with his stride.
