With Spring Training fully underway, the Yankees have been pleased with their veterans Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon:
"Everybody is throwing well," general manager Brian Cashman said. "That's the way you want it to be. Hope it continues. We've had good pitching down here so far, thankfully."
Garcia has thrown five scoreless innings in two outings, while Colon has given up three runs in nine innings after his four-inning, two-run performance against the Pirates Wednesday night. Colon, who allowed both runs in the second inning of the Bombers' 4-2 win, gave up four hits, striking out seven without issuing a walk.
No one really knew what to expect when we signed Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon as "reclamation" type signings, but so far, they have performed well beyond expectations. I would think that in a perfect world, they would both make the team out of spring training to ensure maximum depth in the rotation.
After the unfortunate disaster in Japan, Kei Igawa has left camp to try and get in touch with his family in Japan. The Yankees have also made a $100K donation to the relief efforts.
