New York Yankees News: Montero, Colon, the Young Guns, and Jeter's Jaw

Phelps threw pretty well today. Warren. Brackman. All of these kids have thrown the ball extremely well at this point in camp. I’m happy. Very happy… We’ve talked about that we have pitching coming, and I really believe that."

-Joe Girardi, to LoHud

If there's one thing I've learned since I started following the Yankee farm system closely (about 6 seasons), for every 5 prospects we talk about, one will still have a future with the team in 3 years.  Phelps, Warren, Brackman, Noesi, Banuelos.

Which one will last?

There are no sure things in baseball, but Jesus Montero is closing in on that status. Baseball America, the gold standard for publicly available scouting, ranks the Yankees catcher as the #3 prospect in baseball.

They have him behind outfielders Bryce Harper and Mike Trout but ahead of Phillies' top prospect Dominic Brown, which is the first time I've seen Montero ranked that high.

Saturday could be the first important day of the young (pre-natal?) season: the first start by Bartolo Colon.

At least so far, Joe G. is saying all the right things about Colon.  Nova has options, so I wouldn't be stunned to see both Colon and Garcia make the rotation out of Spring Training to see how they really fair in the AL East.

Here's a new billboard: the Shaving Jeter.
