This week's bogus rumor sighting:
Losing CC Sabathia to any team would be damaging to a Yankee rotation that has only Phil Hughes, A.J. Burnett and Ivan Nova signed for next season. Losing Sabathia to the Red Sox? Potential baseball disaster.
I'm more worried about losing CC to the Nippon Ham Fighters, or to alien abduction, than I am worried about losing him to the Red Sox.
- Joe Torre's experience dealing with the media may be serving him well in his new role as executive VP of baseball operations for MLB:
Through the (Alex) Rodriguez (gambling) and now (Red Sox) beer incidents, it appears that Torre may be establishing a pattern....: when something of concern occurs, get ahead of the news cycle by announcing that you’re looking into it, weather the storm of criticism and pundits pointing out that you have no authority for enforcement, and then announce that no action will be taken at this time.
I can't think of a better solution to either situation.
- I'm pretty sure Eric Chavez's ship has sailed. He's almost 34, he's earned over $70 million in his career, and he hasn't been healthy or that effective since 2006. But, he'd deeply consider returning to New York in 2012, a nice gesture, but signing a backup for A-Rod that's even more injury-prone makes zero sense for the Yankees.
