After writing about the likely futility of trying to get something more out of Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia, I was bothered by my inability to think of examples: how many pitchers out of the Colon and Garcia pile really have come back? With Jay Jaffe’s help, I looked back at the last 15 years of baseball. Here is a discussion of what we found (free). It’s a short list, and it ain’t pretty. Little did I know that Andy Pettitte would apparently slam the door on his pitching career this morning, making the rotation’s destiny all the more of a nervous question.
