It's obvious Joe G is not a believer in Gritty Gutty Brett Gardner.
Last season, GGBG had a solid major league season (.270/.345/.379 going 26/31 on SB attempts). It was certainly comparable to Melky's .274/.336/.416, 10/12SB. But when Gardner returned to the lineup from a broken finger, he was reduced to a role as pinch runner and defensive sub, even as Cabrera struggled down the stretch.
This season, GGBG hasn't started against lefties. Granted, Lester and Price are 2 of the top 5 lefties in MLB, but if that was going to be the plan, why don't we have a better platoon option than Marcus Thames? His defense hurt the Yankees against last night. I have no doubt that Gardner would have caught that ball and helped contain the inning.
Mark Teixeira is now 0-16 to start the season. When you go to his BRef page and look up his 2010 splits, here's the screen you get:
Ain't it the truth?
Of two Yankee who needed hot starts, which would you say has started better, Robbie Cano or Curtis Granderson?
