Doubleheader

The Yanks host the Tigers at 1:05, then take a bus to Port Charlotte to play the Rays at 7:05.

Sabathia starts in the day game while Aceves, Gaudin and Mitre will pitch under the lights.

The day game's on YES while the night game's on MLBN.

  • Game 1: Postgame notes -

Sabathia pitched, by far, his best game of ST: 5.1 ip, 2 er, 4 h, 2 bb, 8 k. The four relievers (Mo, Ring, Pope and even Alby) largely did a good job, limiting Detroit to two baserunners in closing out the game.

Arod had two hits including one of the longest homeruns you'll ever see. It cleared the scoreboard in left-centerfield. We talked about how Jesus hit the 'M' on the top of the scoreboard in batting practice, but Arod cleared the scoreboard in an actual game.

Jamie Hoffmann walked thrice and stole a base.

While Sergio Mitre ptiched well, Chad Gaudin struggled. Mitre went five and gave up just two runs (with seven K's). Gaudin went 2.1 and gave up four runs (three earned).

Juan Miranda went 2-4 with a HR. Grandy also had two hits. Gardner, Swisher, Curtis and Posada had a single apiece.

Jesus allowed a wild pitch (though it should've been a passed ball) on a slider in the dirt, then rocketed a double in his only AB. That's his biggest area of improvement right now: blocking bad pitches. If he can't do that, pitchers will be afraid to 'bury' any pitches with him, rendering their arsenals less effective.
