GGBG is getting close to returning, but the rehab is taking far longer than expected:
Brett Gardner expects to participate in batting practice on Tuesday, a sign that he's come closer to returning from the broken thumb that has sidelined him since July 26. Gardner said he hopes to be ready for a minor league rehab assignment as early as Thursday.
Girardi said Gardner would be thrown right back into the mix at center upon his return.

Chad Gaudin may start in place of Sergio Mitre on Thursday.
Girardi said pitcher Sergio Mitre, who in his last start was struck on the forearm, may still miss his scheduled start on Thursday. Mitre didn't throw his scheduled bullpen session on Monday, instead participating only in a "light catch."
"His start is still in question," Girardi said. "We'll have a much better idea tomorrow."
Girardi said right-hander Chad Gaudin is preparing to make the spot start if Mitre can't go.
- Ian Kennedy threw off a mound and will throw live batting practice tomorrow.
The Yankees right-hander, coming back from May surgery to remove an aneurysm from beneath his right biceps, threw 45 pitches off a mound at the team's complex in Tampa, Fla., and pronounced himself all set to throw batting practice Wednesday.
