John's pal Joel Sherman of the NY Post makes his to-do list on how to fix the Yankees:
May 1, 2007 -- THERE must be a level of blind faith with the Yankees now. They must believe, for example, that Mariano Rivera will be Mariano Rivera. Because what is the alternative? Either Rivera is special or the Yankees are shot no matter who the manager is.
The Yankees must believe the same with Mike Mussina and Chien-Ming Wang, and Bobby Abreu and Robinson Cano. Because if not them, then who?
George Steinbrenner ended a weekend of speculation about Joe Torre's status yesterday by issuing a temporary reprieve to his manager. Like with Rivera, Mussina, Wang, Abreu and Cano, Steinbrenner has to know the alternatives to Torre are not good. You have to hope for the best with the proven people.
What the Yanks must do now, therefore, is begin fixing what can be fixed. Remember, the Yanks recovered from 11-19 two years ago by, among other things, promoting Cano and Wang, and churning through pitching until Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon popped up as revelations.
